Yerevan State Musical Comedy Theatre was founded in 1941, December 23, with the performance of V. Valentinov’s “The Fire Priestess” musical comedy and was officially opened in 1942, June 22, with Rudolf Nelson’s “The King is Enjoying” musical comedy.
1940s were the years of creative raising of the theatre, under the direction of stage manager Vartan Adjemyan.
Since 1962 February, the theatre was named after the great Armenian classic writer Hagop Paronyan.
The artistic company was completed with skilful actors, singers, dancers from Moscow, Leningrad, Tbilisi, Baku and Mainly from Dony Rostov.
From the first days of the existence of the theatre the stage design was on its height. Such decorators and designers as Michael Arutchyan, Sergei Arutchyan, Alexandre Shakaryan, Yervand Kochar, Karo Minassyan, Ashot Mirzoyan, Grisha Sahakyan were working in the theatre, doing great creative work.
Repertoire of the theatre was formed by the musical comedies of classics such as Strauss, Calmann, Milleker, Dunaevsky, Lepin. There was a great demand of national musical comedies and the performances of Tigran Chukhajyan’s and Artemy Aivazyan’s musical comedies had a big success. Some composers, such as Vartan Tigranyan,Vagharshak Kotoyan, Alexander Harutiunyan, Grikor Yeghiazaryan wrote new musican comedies for the theatre.
