Bjni fortress was founded in the early Middle Ages. In the 10th century, the fortress was rebuilt and fortified by the efforts of the princes of Pahlavuni: protected by impenetrable rocks and double walls 12-15 meters high, the fortress acquires strategic and economic importance. Since the 13th century the princes Zakaryans ruled the castle. It was repeatedly invaded and destroyed, especially by the Seljuk Turks and the Mongols, and finally emptied in the 17th century. Most of the walls, a secret passage, as well as the ruins of many buildings of various significance have been preserved.
