In Armenia, when the magnificent Byzantine religious architecture marries the singular local architecture, the resulting mixture is called Haghpat Monastery. Overlooking the Debed canyon as well as the peasant houses that surround it, the Haghpat monastery is one of the most beautiful complexes in the country. The construction dates back between the 10th and 13th centuries and was prompted by Queen Khosrovanuche. The monastery is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
